That Silver Headset

We all have fond memories attached to some objects, songs, places. They might be small and less noticable to others but quite impactful in individual's lives.

So, thought to write down some words related to all those special things from my life before I become too old and my memory erases them forever. I am sure if anyone of you reading this, can relate to this.

So here goes my first essay on my very first topic. I am writing about something that is from 18 years old memory book. Back then, having a simple 2G color keypad phone was nothing but luxury and if any mobile would bring radio along with it, would be a hotcake to everyone. The era was of FMs. As I studied in college that was 3 states away from my home, language was big issue. But music never had and has no language, right? So, surfing through Tamil radio stations became my obsession while staying at hostel. Also, to mention my hostel life was quite hard and had no modes of entertainment. We were not allowed to watch TV, use laptops, and the list of Don'ts would go on. So this mobile phone's radio was the only breather. And there comes the topic of today's write up. My Silver Headset. It was a most simple wired headphone but very extraordinary for me. Because it meant Freedom for me. It was my best friend of all times. That headphone eared me beautiful music through all radio stations. I remember, I used to repent for not being able to listen to Hindi songs throughout the day as unlike Kolkata. Although, Radio City would play Hindi songs for one hour but that too not everyday. I used to rush to hostel terrace and go to my favourite corner to stand, sit or dance along with the songs of that time. That Silver headphone, used to move along with me whenever I would dance. Sometimes, it would stop me too from stumbling. Songs from movies like Guru, Om Shanti Om, Jab We Met, Life...in a metro, Anwar, Awarapan, Bas Ek Pal songs were the hot hits that would be played only for an hour.

Then comes my most eminent finds. Tamil radio stations that played and introduced me to wonders of Tamil music. Munbe Vaa, Arabu Naade, Kakka Kakka, Kalluri etc. My headset was the only medium to connect through and be free in the world of music. Hardly, anyone would notice me without that headset in hostel. It gave me my own world. A different space of tunes and rhythms that helped me forget other chaos.

We often loose things, but memories still live on.

To the Silver headphone,
I still remember you and I can feel you 💝
